When Are Tooth Extractions Needed?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its place in the jawbone. This procedure is a permanent solution for many oral health conditions.

Our dentists often perform tooth extractions to remove severely damaged and irreparable teeth, as well as impacted or misaligned teeth.

During a tooth extraction, you will receive a local anesthetic to numb the surrounding area and prevent discomfort. Once the tooth is removed, your dentist will provide you with specific instructions for aftercare and recovery. Following these instructions will help ensure that you heal as quickly as possible.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

The last set of teeth that will erupt are your wisdom teeth. These come in when you are between the ages of 17 and 25, filling in the back corners of your mouth.

Sometimes, wisdom teeth may not come in correctly or in the right position. This can impact how well they function and create problems with your oral hygiene. It can be difficult to clean around them when they haven't fully erupted. Your dentist may recommend an extraction to remove them and treat the issue.

Repairing Excessive Damage

While your dentist can save a damaged tooth under many circumstances, there are times when removal is the best option. This damage can result from dental issues like injury, gum disease or excessive decay.

If you've had a tooth extracted, you will need a replacement to fill the space. The purpose of the replacement is to prevent shifting and protect your bite and oral health. Your dentist will discuss tooth replacement options with you, including dental bridges, crowns, and dentures.
