The Importance of Routine Dental Exams

Even if you brush and floss daily, plaque and tartar still build up on your teeth over time. This can cause oral conditions like cavities and gum disease to develop. Regular oral exams, ideally twice a year, allow your dentist to identify any oral health issues and make a plan to treat them accordingly.

During a dental checkup, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, jaw and bite to evaluate their health. You may also have dental X-rays, oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures. These can help diagnose conditions, monitor your oral health and assist with treatment planning.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is a disease that can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. Your dentist will check for it as part of your routine exam. Regular screenings allow the best chance of early diagnosis and treatment for an ideal outcome.

Caring for Your Teeth Between Visits

At-home dental care is as important to oral health as routine exams and professional cleanings. To keep your teeth clean and healthy, brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss at least once daily.

Dental Hygiene Cleaning

When plaque and debris are not cleaned away regularly, they can build up, causing issues like cavities, gum disease and bad breath. During your routine visit, your dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums to prevent the development or worsening of oral conditions.

To begin the cleaning, they will perform scaling to remove tartar and plaque from your teeth. This will be followed by polishing to clear away any remaining debris. To finish, they will floss your teeth thoroughly.

Once the treatment is complete, your dental hygienist will discuss at-home care with you and answer your questions.

Fluoride Treatment

Our dentists typically recommend fluoride treatment for patients with a high risk of tooth decay. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help rebuild the minerals in tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay. We offer a variety of fluoride flavours to suit the preferences of both kids and adults alike.
